After moving into our new neighborhood a year ago I was told by several "seasoned" neighbors what I could and couldn't do (legally) in our neighborhood. One, of course, was the "no clothes line" rule. Well, today I decided to visit the Municipal center. I was loaded with questions. Can I hang my clothes on a line outside, can I put my garbage out by the curb, can I have those chickens I dream about (the neighbors said it was illegal)?

The ladies working for the city were wonderful. Ready to answer every question I could throw at them. Although I'll admit, they were a little befuddled by my chicken question. You know that face... the one that says "are you crazy or just pulling my leg?" When they got over the shock and realized I wasn't joking the answer I WAS NOT HOPING for was "No, we don't allow chicken's." We CAN however have that clothes line all the neighbors complained about. I was warned that the neighbors will probably kick and scream once they see it but I'm not violating any city laws.

I left municipal bldg feeling a little deflated. I really wanted those chickens. Even though I pretty much knew early on that it wouldn't be allowed in our neighborhood I held on to that inkling of hope. After licking my wounds over the loss chicken battle I decided I'm going to petition the city. I'm a one woman army ready for action. I want those damn chickens. At least I want a good explanation as to WHY I can't have them. Call me crazy, those ladies at the city building sure think I am. But we'll see what happens anyway.

As for the garbage. Nope! It stays by the garage and the garbage man has to walk up to get it. Thats ok by me :)

Too bad about the chickens, but have fun with the clothesline! There was a woman in Halifax who had a big kerfluffle over her chickens in the city. She lost them in the end, unfortunately.

Ahhh, more and more people want their own little flock of backyard chix! I grew up on a little farm in Maine with chickens, and though fun and adorable and how great to have fresh eggs--they were VERY MESSY, lol. I guess because my Mom and Dad let them run helter skelter. I sang hang that clothes line and hang all of your dainties on it!

I would investigate that reasoning about the chickens too -- sometimes the laws are just that you can keep hens but no roosters (because of the noise). Sometimes you are allowed "PET" chickens but you're not allowed to breed and slaughter them. However, you can keep them as "pets" in your yard and collect their eggs! I'm looking into an Eglu for our yard. Thankfully we have a 6' privacy fence so I think that will help with the neighbors. Plus I think the Eglu looks so clean and modern that people will be too busy being fascinated with it to complain!

Thank you for the tip Mandi! I recently heard about the Eglu and found a video of it on YouTube. That would be perfect. When I asked the ladies at the city about the chickens all they said is "the only domesticated animals you can have legally are cats and dogs." I'll look into it further.

Way to go on the clothes line Michelle. Sorry about the chickens. I know we are going to have some if we are up on the farm. Along with a few other critters the boys can think up. I want pigmy goats just for pets, but that was vetoed! Men!

Yup you need a hobby farm kiddo!

I'm proud you took the proactive approach~ and maybe one day you will be able to have those chickens!

As far as cloths on the line~ I would certainly hope all bans would be lifted...we are all trying to save what little energy we have.

Good for you!!

Hugs

Ugh- I have the same issues here in my neighborhood. No chickens. I totally agree with Mandi. Maybe if I took that approach to City Hall, maybe it'll fly (no pun intended!)
